Understand prepaid and monthly service

A payment schedule and a commitment are related, but they are not the same thing.

01

Payment before use

Prepaid can mean credit used as you go or an allowance lasting a defined period. A pack may recur automatically. Check what expires, what remains as balance and what happens if the next payment fails.

For a backup phone, ask about inactivity. The line may be important for account recovery even if it rarely makes calls. Do not assume occasional incoming messages keep it active under every provider’s rules.

02

Monthly agreements

A regular bill may continue across a minimum term and beyond it. The amount paid each month does not by itself describe when the agreement can end. Separate airtime and device commitments.

Check the effect of changing an allowance. A change can have an effective date, eligibility conditions or consequences for a benefit. Obtain confirmation instead of relying on an informal assurance.

03

Select by routine

Someone using data daily needs a different comparison from someone preserving an emergency spare line. Use actual records of consumption and note whether travel or laptop use changes the pattern.

Keep the renewal process manageable. Unused service can still incur obligations when an agreement remains active. Use the formal stopping route rather than simply removing an app or SIM.

Put it into practice

  1. Identify credit, bundle or billed service.
  2. Read expiry, renewal and minimum term.
  3. Check inactivity if use will be occasional.
