Plan the journey
List final destinations and transit stops. Check each against the provider’s current rules for your exact line. A plan shown to new customers may not match an older agreement.
Include fair-use limits, pass triggers and reset periods. A ferry or aircraft can use a special network, and a phone near a border may connect across it. The handset’s welcome message can provide useful context.
Separate the activities
Calling a foreign number from the UK is international calling. Using a mobile service while abroad is roaming. A travel-data profile may not provide an ordinary voice number or receive messages for the UK line.
Streaming needs connectivity as well as a content subscription. A subscription included at home does not establish that overseas data is included. Check both arrangements.
Prepare the device
Select default lines deliberately and inspect data fallback. Download essential maps and limit unnecessary backups where appropriate. Laptop updates can consume a travel allowance rapidly.
Learn what flight mode, roaming-data settings and Wi-Fi calling each do. No single setting should be assumed to control all possible charges without checking the provider’s treatment.
