01

PAC and STAC

Ofcom explains PAC for retaining a number and STAC for switching without retaining it. Where the text route applies, send PAC to 65075 or STAC to 75075. Codes last 30 days. Accounts with multiple lines can require another route.

Asking for a code is not the same as completing a transfer. Supply it only to the receiving provider through the official process. Check existing obligations before selecting a date.

02

Maintain continuity

Test the new service first where feasible. Keep the old line active when the number is to be retained. Avoid scheduling the move just before a critical event or journey if interruption would cause difficulty.

A handset payment or unrelated household product may continue separately. Ask for the outstanding position rather than assuming a number move ends every obligation.

03

Confirm completion

Test ordinary calls from another network and text messages. The number displayed by a phone can be an unreliable indicator of full routing. Capture dates and examples if some services still fail.

Retain final account records and clarify any credit or balance. Do not close off access before downloading necessary information.

Put it into practice

  1. Choose PAC or STAC for the desired result.
  2. Give the code to the receiving provider.
  3. Test routing and reconcile the final bill.
